On the 6th of July, Giorgia Meloni landed in Strasbourg to meet the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the Prime Minister of Czechia, Petr Fiala. The President of both Fratelli d’Italia and of the European Conservatives and Reformists party continues on her path to consolidate her position on the European scene in a series of meetings with EU leaders.

Her presence alongside Fiala, on the day when the Czech Prime Minister presented the priorities  of the Czech Presidency before the plenary, shows the undeniable relevance of the ties between European conservatives.

Giorgia Meloni went on to reiterate the gratitude of the European conservative family for the initiative undertaken last March by Fiala himself, along with the Polish and Slovenian premieres Morawiecki and Jansa, first among European leaders to go to Kiev and express support and closeness to Ukrainians.

Meloni and Fiala underlined the common position of strong support towards Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity. Energy and food security issues were put on the table for discussion, while the EP’s plenary vote confirmed the inclusion of natural gas and nuclear energy in the EU taxonomy,

Meloni and Fiala agreed that independence from Russian gas can only be achieved by respecting the choices of each member states on their energy mixes. This can be made by promoting joint investments in infrastructures and technological research, and, above all, by putting aside the ideological strains that might cause enormous damage to European companies and that could lead the “Old Continent” towards new dependencies from unreliable nations.

Giorgia Meloni expressed strong appreciation for the five priorities of the Czech presidency, which aim to drive the work of the EU Council in a spirit of pragmatism and realism on all important fronts: “The Czech presidency – said Meloni – is a great opportunity for us, to open a debate on issues that can no longer be postponed, such as energy supply, humanitarian crisis, and immigration. FdI and the ECR Group will play an important role thanks to the pragmatism that defines us. I consider the vote on taxonomy a good show of this pragmatism”. It was a logical connection between Meloni and the leader of the ODS party who is, along with Fratelli d’Italia, part of the European Conservatives and reformists Party.

A very good connection, which was not so obvious, was the one with the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola , EPP candidate, even though she was elected also with the support of the ECR group.

The meeting took place in a positive atmosphere with reciprocal personal esteem and sympathy between the two young women who, in their respective roles, are committed to the cause of the future of Europe. The meeting symbolised the following step of a political path, which began with the election as Vice President of Roberts Zile, who fully readmitted the European Conservatives in playing an important role in the EP”. Finally, Meloni remarked Roberta Metsola’s courage and determination on the Ukrainian crisis.

Once again and without a doubt, Giorgia Meloni’s trip to Strasbourg was a positive outcome; in fact, in just a few hours and with an agenda worthy of a prime minister,  she succeeded in denying  the vulgate that would see her isolated on an international level.
