Meloni denies rumours of technocrat government

There have been whispers in Italy that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government could fall and make way for a technocrat government similar to the one that in 2011 was led by Mario Monti, a politician and economist close to European institutions, something Meloni called a ‘conspiracy’.

Reasons given by the press for the hypothesis include the ongoing migration crisis and the lack of agreement at a European level on how to manage it.

Meloni said she sees concerns “especially in the wishes of those who, as always, imagine that a democratically elected government must go home.”

“The left can continue to make the list of ministers of the technical government, meanwhile we will continue to govern (the country),” she added.

During the interview, Meloni said that she “will definitely not fall because of a conspiracy. What happened to others before me will not happen to me”, referring to former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi who fell in 2011 and  handed over to Monti.

“If it goes wrong it will be because of us, because of something concrete”, the prime minister added.

All centre-right ministers have denied that this risk exists, but several have pointed out that there are countries ruled by the left that hope that Italy will soon be run by technicians and that the right will lose power.

“They are wishing Italy ill hoping to wrest some power for themselves (…) Many are rooting for a rise in the spread or a downgrade by the rating agencies so they can question the government and upset, again, the will of the people”, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto (Fratelli d’Italia/ECR) wrote on X.

Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani (Forza Italia/EPP), says he is not worried about the spread of speculation and that the government will prove it is serious, credible and reliable in protecting the Italian economy and investors.
