A 39-year-old man accused of threatening to kill Bulgarian Defence Minister Todor Tagarev over his position on the war in Ukraine was arrested in Sofia on Tuesday.

Tagarev, who is part of the new government in Sofia, is pro-European and strongly in favour of military support for Ukraine. However, until recently and for almost a year, Bulgaria has been governed by a caretaker government appointed by President Rumen Radev, who is widely seen as pro-Kremlin.

On 4 July, the accused threatened to kill a minister by sending him a message on his personal social media profile, the Sofia District Prosecutor’s Office reported.

The man reportedly threatened Tagarev because he disliked his position in the Ukraine war.

Throughout the investigation, it was established that the social network profile from which the threat was sent was created and used by the accused G.D. The man was detained for 72 hours by order of the prosecutor’s office.

Tagarev and the Defence Ministry have not commented on the case for now.

Ten days ago, pro-Russian demonstrators protested in Sofia, demanding that Bulgaria not send military aid to Ukraine. Initially, it was announced that their march under the name “March for Peace” would reach Tagarev’s residence, but its organisers changed the route.

On 16 July, Tagarev said in a TV interview that the Kremlin’s policy and propaganda are having a serious success in Bulgaria.

“It (propaganda and politics) is supported by significant public groups, parties and to some extent by the presidential institution,” he added.
