Polish President Andrzej Duda and his Lithuanian and Ukrainian counterparts, Gitanas Nausėda and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, met in Kyiv on Wednesday to discuss the importance of strengthening NATO’s presence on the Eastern Flank, ahead of the NATO summit in Vilnius.

As part of the “Lublin Triangle” formation, a regional alliance between Ukraine, Lithuania and Poland, Duda met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to celebrate his country’s Constitution Day and discuss the current situation on the battlefield, including the risk of a Russian attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

“We are doing everything to make the Vilnius summit rich in decisions so that it causes improvement of the security in our part of Europe and a reliable perspective of Ukraine’s membership in the (North Atlantic) Alliance,” Duda said.

He added that it is in the common interest to make NATO’s presence even stronger on its Eastern flank and, in the near future, receive Ukraine as a fully-fledged member of the Alliance, pledging to “make that come true” as soon as possible.

This is the fifth time Duda has visited Ukraine since the full-scale war in Ukraine broke out on 24 February 2022. The day before, the Lublin Triangle met in Kyiv to express support for Ukraine amid Putin’s recognising of the independence of separatist people’s republics on Ukraine’s territory.

During a meeting in Lviv in January, the three countries’ leaders signed a joint declaration confirming Ukraine’s non-negotiable right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
