Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed the EU-US trade deal on Monday, saying it avoided “potentially damaging” consequences. Meloni, an ally of US President Donald Trump on many issues, warned earlier this month of a “trade war within the West”.
Speaking at a summit in Ethiopia, Meloni said that “an escalation in trade relations between Europe and the United States would have unpredictable and potentially devastating consequences.”
However, she added that she still had to “look into the details” of the deal.
She made the statement hours after Trump and the EU’s Ursula von der Leyen struck a deal in Scotland that would subject EU exports to a 15 percent tax.
Meloni stressed that she was “positive” about the deal being concluded.
A right-wing leader in Italy said Rome would consider granting exemptions, “especially for some agricultural products.”

French PM Bayrou slams EU-US trade deal as ‘submissive’
Disappointment over the deal is widespread in France, with European Affairs Minister Benjamin Haddad renewing calls to prepare to fire the EU’s “bazooka” – the EU’s counter-coercion tool – against the US.
