Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Monday criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for failing to reach a lucrative trade deal with Donald Trump, calling the talks “Trump eating von der Leyen for breakfast.”
The deal, unveiled after von der Leyen and Trump met in person in Scotland on Sunday, includes a flat 15% tariff on EU cars and other goods, the US president said.
“It is obvious to me that this is not an agreement,” Orban said on the Hungarian live show “Warrior’s Hour.” “This was not a deal between President Donald Trump and Ursula von der Leyen — it was Trump eating von der Leyen for breakfast. That’s what happened.”
As part of the deal, the EU also committed to buying $750 billion in US energy and investing $600 billion in the US, exceeding previous commitments. However, it is not yet clear how these purchases will be structured.
Speaking to the media, Orban did not hold back, calling von der Leyen a “lightweight” compared to Trump and criticizing what he sees as the EU’s weak negotiating position.
Orban, a persistent opponent of the von der Leyen commission, also said the US-UK deal was “much better than this one” and therefore it was difficult to call the EU deal a success.
