On March 2, French President Emmanuel Macron stated his nation would augment its nuclear stockpile and bolster its dissuasive capabilities, as the likelihood of worldwide disputes surpassing the nuclear boundary intensifies, according to Reuters.

“Presently, we are undergoing a period of geopolitical volatility, coupled with hazards,” Macron conveyed during a discourse from a submarine installation in Brittany, noting that a “fortification” of the French deterrence strategy was essential.

Concurrently, Bloomberg reports that Macron indicated the United States would assume a pivotal position in European defense, yet cautioned that recent pronouncements from Washington imply that Europe should adopt a more considerable part in securing itself.

France’s present-day collection includes 290 nuclear payloads, approximating levels from 1984, as per the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The zenith of France’s atomic prowess occurred in the early 1990s, when the nation possessed as many as 540 warheads; currently, they are allocated among aerial delivery mechanisms and ArianeGroup’s M51 submarine-launched ballistic projectiles.

Macron further revealed that France will collaborate with the UK and Germany on “very long-range missile projects” as a component of this closer, heightened cooperation.

It is worth mentioning that, as per a French official from the Elysee Palace, there exists a potential for atomic arms proliferation globally today. The Elysee Palace representative underscored that “we are manifestly witnessing the dismantling of everything remaining of the arms control framework,” further stating that nuclear-armed countries are no longer shying away from military engagements, citing India and Pakistan.
