The conservative nationalist ECR group, currently the sixth force in the European Parliament, is edging closer to becoming the third-largest group with 85 seats, recent projections for the next European elections in 2024 show.
According to the projections, ECR placed just below Renew Europe, which would win 89 seats, a 12 seats drop from 2019.
At the same time, the centre-right EPP and the centre-left S&D are expected to keep their lead with 165 and 141 seats respectively.
However, the combined de facto majority with Renew Europe would shrink, giving ECR increased leverage in decision-making as a new kingmaker.
Renew would be followed by the right-wing Identity and Democracy group with 64 seats, the Left group (51 seats) and Greens/EFA (49 seats), while 52 seats would go to the Non-Inscrits and 11 seats would go to new parties with no European Parliament group affiliation.
