Universities need to stop actively recruiting international students, the House of Representatives said on Tuesday due to the strain it has on resources.

According to the House of Representatives, the number of students coming in is now affecting the amount of available accommodation in student residences, and lecture halls are becoming overcrowded.

About 40% (42,000) of first-year students in Dutch universities come from abroad, according to Statistics Netherlands.

“Today, the House supported our request to stop actively recruiting international students. That’s not for nothing. Housing is sometimes even in tents and almost always abysmal. And education rarely benefits from unnecessary Anglicisation,” tweeted SP MP Peter Kwint on Tuesday.

Currently, in the EU, any EU citizen is entitled to study at any EU university under the same conditions as nationals.

Education, Culture and Science Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf said will come up with a plan in February to deal with this situation, NOS reported.
