The presidential election in Cyprus will take place on 5 February. The president of Cyprus is not only the head of state but also represents the country in the European Council. Centre-right Nicos Anastasiades (DISY-EPP) currently holds the position but is not allowed to run in the February vote after serving two terms.
Recent polls suggest that the EPP will lose the Cypriot seat in the European Council to centrist independent Nikos Christodoulides, supported by DIKO (S&D Group in the EU Parliament), EDEK (S&D), KA (part of the informal EAFD euro party), and DIPA (part of the liberal ALDE euro party). He is also set to beat DISY candidate Averof Neofytou with a two-third majority in a potential run-off election.
