Prime Minister Andrej Plenković presented an unprecedented list of highly ambitious energy projects for the country at the COP27 in Egypt on Tuesday, but Croatian media are sceptical about feasibility.

In his speech, Plenkovic announced a project titled ‘Hydrogen Valley Northern Adriatic‘, where Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy should cooperate to produce up to 5,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year.

In another pledge, he said Croatia would “invest more than €4 billion in the next decade in modernising our railways. By 2032, we will have a whole fleet of battery-powered trains that will replace the diesel engines”.

Neither project has previously been mentioned by his government or the media.

Plenković also said Zagreb plans to set up a national centre for climate and ecological transition, warning that “this summer’s unprecedented drought” caused damages of €300 million to Croatia’s agriculture.

No expert analysis of the announcements was provided by the media, but they made it plain that they remained sceptical.

Telegram daily brought the news with the headline: ‘Dead serious, Plenković says: We will have battery-powered trains‘, while 24sata titled the story ‘Plenković’s Egyptian promises‘.
