European Conservatives hope that there will be a right-wing majority in the next European Parliament, Nicola Procaccini, the co-president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group at the European Parliament, told EURACTIV in a video interview.
Looking ahead to the composition of the European Parliament following the EU elections of June 2024, Procaccini said he favours the “Italian model” – of a dominant right – which he described as “effective”.
If such a scenario occurs, it would break the historic socialists (S&D) and European People’s Party (EPP) majority which in the last years governed the European Parliament.
In the meantime, EPP President Manfred Weber is looking to build dialogue with right-wing forces such as the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, leader of Brothers of Italy.
On the other hand, the European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said in several interviews that she looks more at the centre rather than at the extremes, without specifying which political parties she was referring to.
In Italy, the far-right party Brothers of Italy is leading the government. The latter is in coalition with Matteo Salvini’s League Party and the centre-right ‘Forward Italy’ founded by ex-President Silvio Berlusconi.
