Former Education Minister and chemistry professor Nikolay Denkov will be promoted as a candidate for prime minister, Bulgaria’s second largest political party, We Continue the Change, announced on Thursday.
On Wednesday, former prime minister Boyko Borisov’s GERB party failed to form a government. The second attempt of We Continue the Change also seems doomed to failure.
The pro-European liberal party announced that there would be serious negotiations for support only with the Democratic Bulgaria party, however, the votes of these two political formations are insufficient for a successful vote in the parliament.
“The goal is to see what can unite us. Those who are ready to support such a government must commit that they will work for implementing the policies that we set,” Denkov said.
Denkov is a supporter of the liberal reform of Bulgarian education. He has been Minister of Education in three interims and one regular government but has no experience in other areas. Denkov said he accepted the candidature with the idea of seeking national agreement on the most important issues for the National Assembly.
“If you ask us if we are optimistic about the realisation of this attempt to form a government, let me say that there is a chance,” said the co-chairman of “We continue the change” Assen Vassilev.
Bulgaria has been in a severe political crisis for nearly two years, hurting the country that stands on the eastern flank of NATO and the EU in the face of Russian aggression in Ukraine. There is a risk that Bulgarians will be forced to vote in a fifth general election in the spring of 2023, because of the conflicts between the main political players.
