Bulgaria’s pro-European government will likely survive a no-confidence vote scheduled for 13 October tabled by the pro-Russian radical party Vazrazhdan and the populist ITN over plans to cut coal-fired power plants.

Former long-serving prime minister Boyko Borissov said his GERB party would support the government as it waits for former EU commissioner Maria Gabriel to take over as prime minister in March 2024.

Gabriel is GERB’s nominee for prime minister, and the rotation of prime ministers was agreed before the government was elected. The Bulgarian government is currently headed by Nikolai Denkov of We Continue the Change.

“If we work well, we can also achieve a full mandate for the government,” said Borissov, announcing that he would insist on replacing half of the ministers in the current government because his party gave them a low rating for their work. GERB’s support is enough to save the government.

GERB is trying to increase its influence on the executive after the change of prime minister in March 2024, at the expense of the other party in government – We continue the change.

Asked which ministers he distrusted, Borissov pointed out that there were government departments where the public did not know the names of the ministers because, according to him, some, like the Sports Ministry, were not working.

“Where are the infrastructure projects in sport and the funding of federations? I can name seven or eight other ministries,” Borissov added.

Meanwhile, the pro-Russian parliamentary party BSP (PES) has also announced that it will support the vote of no confidence in the government’s energy policy.
