Bosnia and Herzegovina’s southern city of Mostar will build a solar power plant for its own needs, in the hope of bringing down electricity prices, Klix.ba reported on Tuesday.

“We have decided to build a solar powerplant of 5×12, or 60 megawatts,” said Mayor Mario Kordić.

“In terms of the city’s needs, public lighting and other consumption, we estimate that this plant will considerably decrease the price of electricity,” he said.

The plant will be the first of its kind in the country, which was granted the status of EU candidate in December.

The city is currently seeking all necessary permits with a view to starting construction sometime this year, Klix.ba reported.

More than half of Bosnia’s electricity is generated by hydropower, with the remainder coming from five lignite power plants, according to bankwatch.org. The country is the only net exporter of electricity in the Western Balkans.
