Supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is more than doubling its investment to $4 billion from previous commitments, according to a statement Friday. The company held a groundbreaking ceremony for its first plant in Sherman on Thursday.
GlobalWafers is among a number of Taiwanese companies, led by TSMC, that are expanding their presence in the U.S. Many are looking to support customers including Apple Inc. and Nvidia Corp., which are planning to expand manufacturing and sourcing on American soil.
Taiwanese companies, the world's largest electronics manufacturers, are leading the shift in manufacturing to the U.S. While this migration began with sanctions imposed by Washington in recent years, it has accelerated as the current president threatens new tariffs and trade barriers.
In addition to TSMC, Foxconn Technology Group is working with Apple Inc. to add an AI server assembly site in Texas. The Taiwanese company, which makes iPhones and Nvidia AI servers, also plans to expand production in several U.S. states.
GlobalWafers' Texas project has created 1,200 construction jobs and 180 permanent jobs. The company plans to hire up to 650 engineering, technical and operations professionals by the end of 2028, the company said in a statement Friday.
