Amazon said in a statement that the commitment would help drive demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence in Australia, accelerating their adoption and scaling.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the investment in data centers in Sydney and Melbourne was the largest investment in Australia's history by a global technology company.
On Saturday, Albanese met with Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman during a stop in Seattle for the G-7 summit in Canada.
Minister for Industry and Innovation Tim Ayres, speaking on Sky News Australia, said the investment was very significant for the country's digital infrastructure.
“It is in Australia's interest to seize this opportunity,” Ayres said. “We need to be both creators of technology and consumers of it.”
Amazon is also investing in three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland to support expanded infrastructure, the report said.
