China has urged the United States to end the embargo and penalties imposed on Cuba, deeming the recent American limitations against Havana “unlawful” and a “grave breach” of international norms, according to Reuters.
“The United States has intensified its illegitimate unilateral sanctions against Cuba,” the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
“China urges the US to immediately terminate the embargo and sanctions targeting Cuba, as well as any form of forceful pressure,” the ministry further stated, highlighting that such restrictions infringe upon the Cuban populace’s right to progress.
China stands behind Cuba’s endeavors to protect its national sovereignty and security, and strongly objects to meddling in the country’s domestic matters, Beijing emphasized.
Subsequent to a raid in Venezuela resulting in the US apprehending the country’s leader, Nicolas Maduro, US President Donald Trump has declared intentions to take measures against Cuba and has commenced exerting pressure on the island nation’s leadership. The previous week, Trump executed an executive order broadening the sanctions directed at the Cuban government. Beijing has routinely voiced its support for the island nation’s administration amidst strains between the US and Cuba.
News outlets reported that U.S. State Department representatives engaged in discussions with Cuban officials in Havana, signifying the first instance in ten years that a U.S. government aircraft has touched down in Cuba.
