According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, during discussions in Beijing on Thursday, May 14, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping shared their perspectives on significant global and regional concerns, including the circumstances in the Middle East, the “Ukrainian crisis,” and the Korean Peninsula, among other subjects.

Xi Jinping remarked that the globe is experiencing swift transformations and that the global landscape is intricate. He emphasized the significance of establishing a fresh framework for interactions among prominent nations.

“I am prepared to collaborate with President Trump to accurately steer the course of Sino-US relations and designate 2026 as a noteworthy and pivotal year for Sino-US relations, upholding past customs while forging a path into the future,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry quoted Xi as stating.

He further underscored China’s dedication to the steady, robust, and enduring advancement of China-US relations. Xi conveyed his concurrence with Trump in establishing “constructive strategic and stable ties between China and the United States” as a novel strategy for China-US relations, which will function as a strategic guideline for both nations in the ensuing three years and beyond and will be embraced by the citizens of both countries and the global community.

“A constructive strategic and stable relationship between China and the United States is not merely a catchphrase, but rather a matter requiring collaborative action,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry articulated in a statement.

Trade and economic cooperation

Xi Jinping emphasized that the core of China-US economic and trade relations resides in mutually advantageous collaboration. When encountering disagreements, the sole appropriate course of action is “equitable consultations.”

According to a declaration from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the economic and trade teams representing both nations achieved a generally balanced and favorable outcome the preceding day, “which is welcome news for the populace of both nations and the entire world.”

“Both parties should collectively endeavor to uphold the hardly-won positive impetus. China’s avenues for external engagement will broaden progressively… American enterprises will encounter promising prospects in China. China extends a warm welcome to the reinforcement of mutually beneficial cooperation,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry conveyed.

Xi further expressed that both parties should implement the agreed-upon arrangements and optimize the utilization of political and diplomatic channels, along with communication avenues between the armed forces of the two nations. They should also broaden exchanges and cooperation across domains such as trade, health, agriculture, tourism, culture, and law enforcement.

Taiwan issue

Xi emphasized that the Taiwan matter constitutes the most critical aspect within China-US relations. He asserted that with a competent methodology, bilateral connections can sustain overall stability; however, with an ineffective strategy, the two nations might encounter conflict or even a collision, thereby placing China-US relations in an exceedingly perilous scenario.

“Taiwan independence and peace in the Taiwan Strait are incompatible… The US should address the Taiwan issue with utmost circumspection,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry conveyed in a statement.

Trump points to “great relationship” between US and China

Trump, as added by the Chinese ministry, mentioned that he was privileged to undertake a state visit to China. The American leader drew attention to the “excellent rapport” between the United States and China, underscoring the robust connections with Xi Jinping. He emphasized that Xi is a “remarkable leader” and China is a “magnificent country.” The US president voiced his eagerness to collaborate with Xi in order to fortify communication and cooperation, suitably resolve disparities, establish “the finest ever” US-China relations, and engender a “promising future” for both countries.

“In conclusion, he (Trump — ed.) affirmed that the United States and China stand as the foremost and strongest nations globally, and that US-China collaboration can yield numerous significant and advantageous outcomes for both countries and the global community as a whole. He further noted his delegation comprised distinguished representatives from the American business sector who hold China in high regard, and he actively urges them to augment cooperation with China,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry appended.

Trump’s arrival in Beijing occurred on Wednesday, May 13. The core of the deliberations is planned for Thursday, May 14. Xi is also set to host a banquet for Trump on Thursday evening. On Friday, May 15, Trump is slated to reconvene with the Chinese leader for a working lunch prior to the US president’s departure for Washington.

Analysts suggest that Trump’s summit with Xi will illuminate whether the two nations can uphold a recent amelioration in relations, complicated by the US-Israeli war against Iran and an array of other issues, and what compromises each side is amenable to making. China is progressively positioning itself not merely as a civilization endeavoring to catch up with the West but as a superpower poised to outstrip the “Western world.”
