Rodrigo Duterte, the former Philippine president accused of crimes against humanity, is running for mayor in a race analysts say he can win.
Rodrigo Duterte has been held in a cell in The Hague for more than three weeks, charged with crimes against humanity for the deadly anti-drug campaigns he oversaw in the Philippines.
But the former president is still on the ballot for mayor in his hometown next month, a race that political analysts say he has a good chance of winning. The wave of sympathy for Mr. Duterte has also prompted candidates in other races to endorse him.
Even from a distance, it still attracts crowds.
Thousands of people dressed in the green clothes associated with his political party filled the streets of Davao City in the southern Philippines on March 28, turning Mr Duterte's 80th birthday celebration into a massive political rally.
Other rallies took place in the Philippines and abroad, including outside the International Criminal Court detention facility in the Netherlands, where Mr. Duterte has been held since his arrest on March 11.
In Davao, Mr. Duterte remains widely popular and is remembered for his fight against problems such as drugs, petty crime and violence.
