The department noted that the decision is a response to a request from the Ukrainian government, which requested:
• purchase of prefabricated mast trailers;
• major repairs and maintenance;
• spare parts, consumables and components, as well as repair and return services;
• engineering and technical support from the US government and contractors;
• and other related elements of logistical and software support for the FrankenSAM HAWK air defense system.
“This sale will contribute to the achievement of US foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a partner country that is a driving force for political and economic stability in Europe,” the statement said.

The State Department also noted that the sale will improve Ukraine's ability to counter current and future threats and strengthen its air defense capabilities.
“Ukraine will have no difficulty introducing these goods and services into its Armed Forces. The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not change the basic military balance in the region,” the statement said.
Sierra Nevada Corporation will be the prime contractor for this project.
