“We must maintain pressure on Russia. We must even increase it. We must stop Moscow's funding of the war,” Merz said. “The 20th package of sanctions (by the European Union) will be adopted on the fourth anniversary of this war.”
Merz also accused Russia of barbarism. He stated that this country, under this leadership, is now at the lowest point of the deepest barbarism.
“Putin will not end his campaign even if Ukraine surrenders and capitulates,” Merz said of the Kremlin leader. “Russian threats and provocations are already evident in the Baltic states and the Baltic Sea, as well as hybrid attacks throughout Europe, including in Germany.”

The Chancellor reiterated his skepticism about whether direct talks between the United States and Russia, as well as Ukraine, would yield positive results. In his opinion, no one can say whether the war will continue.
He also wants to end the war as soon as possible. However, Merz stressed that only Ukraine itself should resolve territorial issues, “no one else.”
As a reminder, on Monday, EU foreign ministers failed to approve the 20th package of sanctions against Russia during a meeting of the Council of the European Union. This was stated at a press conference after the meeting by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas.
