Recently, cases of detention of vessels from the Russian “shadow fleet” that are on the sanctions lists have become more frequent.
The other day, as Reuters reports, the Swedish Coast Guard took control of a vessel off the coast of the southern Swedish city of Trelleborg in the Baltic Sea due to “unclear flag status.”

It is noted that although the Caffa vessel was flying the Guinean flag, the coast guard suspected that this flag was foreign.
The words of the Swedish Minister of Civil Defense, Karl-Oskar Bolin, are quoted, who reported that the Caffa is a cargo ship from Ukraine's sanctions list.

“The ownership structure is unclear, and there are suspicions that the ship is not insured. This summer, the ship is said to have changed its Russian flag to a Guinean one,” the minister added.
The Swedish Coast Guard has opened a preliminary investigation into suspected violations of maritime law regarding unseaworthiness. Personnel are on board the Caffa to gather information on the condition of the vessel and crew, as well as conduct searches and interviews.
It was previously reported that the French navy had detained a Russian oil tanker under sanctions in the Mediterranean Sea. The Grinch was believed to be sailing from Murmansk under a false flag.
