“Shaheeds” pierced the armor of the West: the Pentagon acknowledged the weaknesses of its air defense system

A few days after the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran, words were heard within the walls of the Capitol that could change the balance of power in the Middle East. Iranian Shahed drones have become an unexpected challenge for the US: the army admits that the current air defense system is not capable of intercepting them with certainty. This was reported by CNN, citing sources present at a closed briefing.

According to the publication, citing an informed source who was present at a closed briefing in the Capitol, the head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Kaine, acknowledged that Shahed is a more serious problem than expected. The drones fly low and slowly, which allows them to evade air defenses more effectively than ballistic missiles.

CNN reports that despite this, officials tried to downplay the alarm, noting that US partners in the Persian Gulf are actively stockpiling interceptor missiles.

The administration of President Donald Trump has avoided giving direct answers to questions from congressional members about how the White House plans to deter Iran. Moreover, officials have stated that “regime change of the ayatollah is a secondary goal.” Washington’s main goals remain unchanged. These are destroying Iran’s missile capabilities, neutralizing its navy, blocking Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, and stopping the supply of weapons to militant groups.

Despite this, Iran's Shahed have become a global destabilizing factor. They are attacking not only Ukraine but also strategic NATO bases. Their ability to bypass modern air defense systems calls into question the security of US allies in the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf.
