“Peace on the horizon”: Polish Prime Minister after Ukraine talks

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, after talks with European leaders, assessed that peace in Ukraine is on the horizon, although the end is still far away. He stressed that coordination of the government and the president on the international stage is critically important, and that he hopes for an urgent meeting with Karol Navrocki.

“We have assessed the outcome of the first stage of these very serious negotiations, involving the leaders of Ukraine, Europe, the United States and Canada. Peace is on the horizon,” the Polish news resource PAR quotes the Prime Minister as saying. The politician clarified that he was talking about the coming weeks, not the coming months or years.

According to Tusk, the basis for hope that the war may end is the American declaration of readiness to participate in security guarantees for Ukraine after peace is concluded.

“This includes the presence of American troops, for example, on the border or on the contact line between Ukraine and Russia. These fairly clear declarations have appeared for the first time. We will see how consistent our partners on the other side of the Atlantic will be,” Tusk said.

He added that peace requires a compromise approach from Ukraine on territorial issues. He stressed that a referendum is needed in which the Ukrainian people will express their will.

According to Tusk, it is possible that decisions will soon have to be made regarding the future of Ukraine and the region, so in the interests of Poland, the government and President Nawrocki must coordinate all their actions at the international level.

“Let's draw conclusions from this, and we must coordinate our actions very precisely, and there is no place for any insults or complaints here; this is a key issue for Poland's security. I am counting on an urgent meeting with the president,” the head of government stressed.
