VIDEO OF THE DAY
The Trump administration is asking countries seeking a permanent seat to contribute at least $1 billion, according to a draft charter for the proposed group, seen by Bloomberg. Trump would be its first chairman and would have authority over membership decisions. Critics worry that Trump is trying to create an alternative or rival to the United Nations, which he has long criticized.
Macron believes the charter goes beyond Gaza and raises significant concerns, particularly regarding respect for the principles and institutional framework of the United Nations, which France considers non-negotiable.
Trump has invited a number of world leaders, including Argentina's Javier Milley and Canada's Mark Carney, to a Gaza Peace Council that will be formed under the auspices of his new Peace Council. Several European countries have been invited to join the Peace Council, according to people familiar with the matter. Trump wants the full charter and mandate of the committee to be signed in Davos on Thursday.
Belarus and Russia are also among the countries invited to join the Peace Council. According to Sky News, this says a lot about the US president's attitude towards Russia and the war against Ukraine.
