High-profile robbery in Germany: tens of millions of euros taken from a bank on Christmas

This year has been marked by several high-profile robberies. This fall, valuables from Napoleon's collection were stolen from the Louvre in Paris. French law enforcement later reported the arrest of several members of the robbery gang.

And the other day, robbers in Germany stole 30 million euros from the Sparkasse savings bank in Gelsenkirchen. This was discovered on the night of December 29, when law enforcement and firefighters arrived at the institution – the bank's alarm went off, writes Handelsblatt. At the same time, witnesses noticed men with large bags who were in the stairwell of a nearby multi-storey car park.

The investigation does not rule out that it was through the parking lot that the attackers entered the storage facility – through the office premises to the archive, from where the robbers made their way to the safe using special equipment.

The victims of the attackers were about 2,700 bank customers, in which almost all of the safe deposit boxes — more than 3,000 — were broken into.

The press calls this robbery one of the largest in German history, recalling that at one time the contents of 650 safe deposit boxes were stolen from the Hamburger Sparkasse bank, and last year 371 safes were broken into at the Deutsche Bank in Lübeck.

Currently, customers are demanding compensation for losses and information from the financial institution.

Recall that this fall, Spanish police investigated an incident involving the disappearance of Pablo Picasso's painting “Still Life with Guitar” (Naturalezamuertaconguitarra), which belongs to a private collector and disappeared during transportation from Madrid to an exhibition at the CajaGranada Foundation in Granada.
