“Germany will never accept this”: Merz declares support for Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, despite seeing no chance of Ukraine joining the EU in 2027, said that the German government would support Kyiv in its defensive war against Russian military aggression. This happened at the party congress of his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) on February 20 in Stuttgart, Deutsche Welle reports.

“Germany will never accept that the criminal Russian regime is systematically waging war against the civilian population of Ukraine, the elderly, women and children,” Merz said, condemning Moscow's rhetoric.

He added that the Russian Federation accompanies its aggression with “simply unbearable Nazi propaganda against the Ukrainian people.”

“A people who have suffered from German and Russian tyranny like hardly any other in the world. This will always meet with a resolute rebuff from the Federal Republic of Germany. Russian aggression is a litmus test for our values and our resolve. Appeasement does not create peace. It only encourages the aggressor,” the Chancellor warned.

Meanwhile, European political circles are actively discussing possible terms of a future peace agreement regarding Ukraine, in particular, accelerating Ukraine's accession to the European Union in exchange for Kyiv making territorial concessions.
