American realpolitik: US vice president calls Trump and Orban the main peacemakers in the war in Ukraine

Budapest, on the eve of the elections that could deprive Viktor Orban of power, has become the scene of high-profile political events. US Vice President JD Vance arrived in the Hungarian capital, where he met with Prime Minister Viktor Orban. During a joint press conference with Orban, he made a sensational statement: in his opinion, the greatest contribution to the efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine was made by Donald Trump and Viktor Orban.

However, another aspect of the visit attracted no less attention – its political overtones. After all, the agreement on the purchase of oil from the United States, which Budapest and Washington plan to sign in the coming days, will take place just a few days before the elections in Hungary. This has caused a wave of discussions about possible interference by Washington in Hungary's internal affairs.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called the visit “historic,” but critics see it as an attempt to bolster Orban's position ahead of the vote, where support from the American leadership and a strategic energy deal could be important factors for voters.

The statements of the US Vice President about the peacemaking role of Trump and Orban, who has been playing along with Moscow and blocking EU financial assistance to Kyiv throughout the years of the Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, have a direct impact on the political context in Hungary itself. It seems that J.D. Vance’s visit could become an example of US interference in the electoral process in Hungary. Despite the statements of the US Vice President himself, who in Budapest accused… Ukraine and the EU of interfering in the elections in Hungary.

“What happened in this country, what happened during this election campaign, is one of the worst examples of foreign interference in an election that I have ever seen or even read about. The bureaucrats in Brussels tried to destroy the economy of Hungary. They tried to make Hungary less energy independent. They tried to increase costs for Hungarian consumers. The European bureaucrats did this because they hate Orban… I am here to help him in this election cycle,” said Vance, who apparently does not consider himself a representative of a foreign country.

Also, the US vice president, standing next to Orban at a press conference, stated that Ukrainian intelligence allegedly has forces that are “trying to influence the outcome of the elections in the US and in Hungary.”

“This is their usual practice. This is part of the price you have to pay for working with some elements of their system,” the vice president said, effectively echoing Hungarian propaganda.

It was previously reported that the EU restricted Hungary's access to information because Budapest was merging it with Russia.
