In Mali, where local Tuareg rebels once defeated mercenaries from the Russian PMC Wagner who supported the local military junta, a series of large-scale attacks on military facilities took place.
VIDEO OF THE DAY
According to Al Jazeera, the explosions were heard in the capital Bamako, near the Kati military base, as well as in a number of cities. The country's Defense Minister, Sadio Kamaru, who participated in military coups in 2020 and 2021, was reportedly killed. At one time, the United States imposed sanctions against Kamaru due to his ties to the Russians – the Wagner PMC.
Wikipedia has already recorded that Sadio Kamaru was killed in a suicide attack at his home on April 25.
According to the publication, the responsibility for the attacks was claimed by Tuareg rebels, as well as a group linked to Al-Qaeda. Despite the fact that the official authorities of Mali claim that “the situation is under control”, experts call the events an unprecedented challenge for the junta of Assimi Goyita. It is stated that Russian mercenaries who supported the army began to leave key points, including Kidal, which, as the attackers claimed, was captured by them.

Al Jazeera, citing witnesses, writes that Russian mercenaries took part in the fighting in Bamako around the airport, where one of their headquarters is located. However, it seems that they have left Kidal, or at least the military camp where they were staying with Malian forces.
Recall that in 2024, Mali announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Ukraine, saying that official Kyiv “supports international terrorists.” This happened after successful attacks by local rebels who destroyed Russian mercenaries. Ukrainians, in particular, were suspected of helping the Tuaregs.
