
The Constitutional Chamber of Venezuela's Supreme Court has ruled that Vice President Delcy Rodriguez will act as acting president of the country in the absence of Nicolas Maduro , who was detained during an operation by the US military, Reuters reports.

The court's decision states that Rodriguez will assume “the position of President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in order to ensure administrative continuity and the comprehensive protection of the nation.”
Despite her new powers, Rodriguez herself is currently in Russia, sources report.
On January 3, she appeared on state television demanding proof that Maduro and his wife were alive. Meanwhile, her brother, the speaker of parliament, Jorge Rodriguez, is reportedly still in Caracas, although he has not been seen in public since Maduro's arrest.
