To bolster its diplomatic ties with Syria’s novel governing body, President Donald Trump’s administration opted to pull out all American soldiers, approximately 1,000 service members, who were still stationed within the nation.
The Wall Street Journal delivers this information.
“The United States is removing its entire contingent of around 1,000 soldiers from Syria, bringing an end to a decade-long American military footprint in the country, where the United States combatted the Islamic State (ISIS),” the journal states.
A source within the American government informed the publication that the US military stands ready to counteract any emerging ISIS threats in the zone, fulfilling its duties to allies to avert a resurgence of the terrorist network.
“Nevertheless, a substantial US presence in Syria is not required anymore, considering the Syrian government’s readiness to shoulder the main load of battling the terrorist menace inside its frontiers,” the functionary appended.
He emphasized that this resolution is unconnected to the escalating strains in the bond between the U.S. and Iran.
“The disengagement procedure from Syria might span approximately two months and encompasses the already finalized departure of soldiers from key US strongholds in northeastern Syria and zones bordering that country’s boundary with Jordan and Iraq. This signifies a fresh phase in the struggle versus ISIS, which is ongoing,” the administration figure articulated.
As a reminder, it was reported in late January 2026 that Russia was extracting forces from Syria.
