During the night of January 3, British and French warplanes bombarded the subterranean infrastructure belonging to the Islamic State (ISIS) militant faction. Western partners persist in their efforts to “hunt down” remaining terrorists to hinder a resurgence of ISIS following its military defeat in 2019.

Information about the collaborative operation was divulged by the UK Ministry of Defence.

Operation details

On Saturday night, January 3, British Typhoon FGR4 combat aircraft, aided by a Voyager refueling plane, united with French air units for a synchronized attack.

Intel uncovered a hidden extremist installation situated in the mountains a short distance north of the ancient city of Palmyra.

“This site was occupied by ISIS, purportedly for the purpose of storing weaponry and explosives,” the agency conveyed in a statement.

To neutralize the objective, the airmen deployed Paveway IV precision bombs, pinpointing the shelter’s entry passages. According to initial reports, the intended target was successfully eliminated. The military underscores that the attack zone was uninhabited, ensuring no risk to civilians.

Signal of determination

UK Defence Secretary John Healy characterized the mission as a display of the UK’s leadership and solidarity with its allies.

“This undertaking exemplifies… our resolve to stand united with our partners to extinguish any revival of ISIS and its perilous ideology in the Middle East,” the minister stated.

As a reminder, near the end of December, the US initiated a substantial offensive against ISIS within Syria, resulting in the deaths of two American soldiers and an interpreter in the country’s center.
