This event unfolds amidst the ongoing Syrian conflict between the government’s military and affiliated factions, who are allegedly supported by Israel. This provides context for Tel Aviv’s operations against Syrian military installations.
Simultaneously, reports are circulating regarding a fresh Israeli aerial attack aimed at the Presidential Palace in Damascus. Official military statements regarding this recent event are pending.
Citing The Times of Israel, it is reported that Israel conducted bombings against Syrian governmental forces when they invaded a town with a predominantly Druze population in southern Syria, subsequent to several days of ethnic confrontations.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have communicated that these actions were taken to protect “friends in Syria,” referencing a “profound fraternal alliance” with allied residents within Israel.
They emphasized that the entry of Syrian troops and armaments into the region is at odds with the “existing demilitarization agreement,” which restricts the presence of military units and weaponry in southern Syria perceived as threats to Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) indicated that they engaged “various armored vehicles, including tanks, armored personnel carriers, multiple rocket launchers, together with access routes” on Monday evening to “impede their progress into the area,” subsequent to observing an armored convoy proceeding towards Sweida.
The strikes represent an infrequent direct offensive against forces loyal to the emerging leadership in Damascus, which Jerusalem previously regarded as a possible partner. Damascus announced a truce in the city on Tuesday morning, but skirmishes were apparently ongoing.
As a reminder, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is of the opinion that Iran is actively preparing for an actual atomic attack, and should they acquire an atomic weapon, they would undoubtedly employ it.
