Save Romania Union party (USR) officially launched its candidates for the 2024 EU elections during the ALDE Europe Council held for the first time in Bucharest on Friday and Saturday.

Elena Lasconi, the mayor of Câmpulung municipality and a former television personality, opens the USR list for the EU Parliament. She is followed by Dan Barna, vice-president of ALDE Europe, Vlad Voiculescu, former health minister, and MEP Vlad Botoș.

Cătălin Drulă, the president of USR, said that the EU Parliament elections mark “a crucial electoral year in Romania” when four election rounds will be held.

“It is the moment to reclaim our country back from the social democrats and usher in a reformist right-wing majority that will take care of the public money and respect the Constitution”, the USR leader added.

Asked if she will only have the role of a ”locomotive” for the party list and then return as mayor, Elena Lasconi said that she wants to do good things for the country and her candidacy is not a mere political manoeuvre.

“I want to do good things for Romania because the country can no longer afford to lose Romanians”, she explained.

In the latest polls, USR is currently polling at 12%.

The ALDE member party is engaged in negotiating for the establishment of a right-wing pole alongside PMP (EPP) and Forta Dreptei – a new party founded by former liberals leader and prime minister Ludovic Orban.
