The Iranian regime must not go unpunished for its violent crackdown on those protesting the death of Mahsa Amini in recent months, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said on Twitter.
On Monday, Rutte blasted the Iranian regime for how it handled protesters that took the streets after 22-year-old Amini died in custody at the hands of Iran’s morality police on 16 September. In particular, he criticised the death sentences the regime issued against some of the protesters.
“The courage of Iranian women is unimaginable. It is unacceptable that peaceful demonstrators have been sentenced to death. Partly on the NL initiative, EU human rights sanctions have been adopted. The actions of the Iranian regime must not go unpunished,” Rutte wrote on Twitter.
On 25 October, Iran blacklisted several EU individuals and media outlets in retaliation for the bloc’s punitive measures on police over a crackdown on Amini protests.
This followed fresh human rights sanctions against the morality police and 11 officials including Iran’s telecommunications minister, accusing them of involvement in repressing the protests.
