Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has promised Finnish counterpart Sanna Marin he will help convince Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who along with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are the only two states left to ratify Finland’s NATO membership request.
Poland, one of the first countries to ratify Finland’s membership, has not always had the best relationship with Helsinki due to the differing interpretations of the rule of law and press freedom.
But Poland and Finland currently share the frontline against Russia, a challenge that ”cannot be met alone”, said Morawiecki. Underlining a unified approach, the Polish prime minister said he was willing to lend a helping hand and put pressure on Hungary.
“In a few days, Prime Minister [Viktor] Orbán and I will meet under the Visegrad Group format. I am sure that together with our friends from Slovakia and the Czech Republic we will ask Viktor Orbán to quickly ratify the documents for Sweden and Finland, as this is critical for the eastern flank of our region,” said Mateusz Morawiecki in the press conference.
The prime ministers of Finland and Poland also demanded the confiscation of assets owned by the Russian oligarchs and the Russian state. Those resources should be used for helping and rebuilding Ukraine, Marin and Morawiecki stated.
