- 2 Israeli professors nominate Daniella Weiss for prize
DUBAI: Radical settler leader Daniella Weiss has been nominated by the Israelis for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.
Weiss' candidacies were reportedly submitted by professors Amos Azaria and Shalom Sadik of Ariel University and Ben-Gurion University.
In a letter to the Nobel Prize Committee, they reportedly argued that “the creation of Jewish communities prevented violence and increased security” and that, despite the deaths of both Jews and Palestinians in Gaza, the death toll in the West Bank was “significantly lower” thanks to Weiss's work.
Weiss, director of the Nahala Settlement Movement, is an active supporter of Israeli annexation and illegal settlements in the Palestinian territories.
Israeli settlements on the West Bank have been deemed illegal by the UN and a number of countries.
In June 2024, Canada imposed sanctions on Weiss and six others “in response to the serious breach of international peace and security caused by their brutal and destabilizing actions against Palestinian civilians and their property in the West Bank.”
The nomination left internet users confused and outraged, with one saying: “For a moment I thought it was a joke, but no, it wasn't.”
Another said: “Nobody would want to be awarded the Nobel Prize if it ever happened.”
The Nobel Peace Prize laureates will be announced on October 10, with the award ceremony scheduled for December 10.
