The United States Treasury Department is considering a plan to mint new one-dollar coins featuring President Donald Trump as part of an initiative to commemorate the 250th anniversary of America's founding, FOX Business reported.
“Despite the forced shutdown of our government by the radical left, the facts are clear: Under the historic leadership of President Donald Trump, our nation enters its 250th anniversary stronger, wealthier, and better than ever,” a Treasury Department spokesman said.
Although the final design for the $1 coin commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States has not yet been selected, the Treasury Department said the initial design “well captures the enduring spirit of the United States and democracy, even in the face of enormous obstacles.” The Treasury Department said it would release more details about the new coin at a later date.
The sketch shows Donald Trump with a raised fist against an American flag, reminiscent of a famous photo taken during an assassination attempt on him in Pennsylvania last year, when he was shot in the ear and escorted away by Secret Service agents.
The Treasury Department has the legal authority to issue one-dollar collector coins, including to commemorate such important events as next year's 250th anniversary of the United States.
The last two commemorative coins issued by the United States Mint in 2024 – the Harriet Tubman coin and the Greatest Generation coin – were sold in quantities of 56,894 and 79,980 pieces, respectively.
According to the Mint, the most popular commemorative coin in history was the 1986 Statue of Liberty coin, which sold nearly 15.5 million.
The last series of commemorative coins to sell over one million copies were the 1995–1996 coins, dedicated to the centennial of the Olympic Games, which was celebrated during the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. In total, over 2.4 million of these coins were sold.
Other popular commemorative issues include the half dollar commemorating the 250th anniversary of George Washington's birth, issued in 1982 with a circulation of over 7.1 million.
Also, coins dedicated to the 1983–1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles sold over 5 million copies, and the 1987 coins created for the 200th anniversary of the US Constitution were sold in the amount of over 4 million pieces.
Earlier, House Republican Representative Claudia Tenney proposed creating a new national holiday to honor President Donald Trump. The proposed holiday would be June 14, Flag Day in the United States, which also happens to be the current president's birthday.
Another rookie congressman introduced a bill to rename Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C., in honor of President Trump.
