The anti-government “Serbia against violence” protests, ongoing for two months since violent shootings shocked the country, expanded to 10 other cities over the weekend and show no sign of stopping.

Major roads were blocked in the cities of Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Niš, Zrenjanin, Šabac, Leskovac, Subotica, Pirot and Kraljevo. Protesters reiterated their demands, requesting a range of changes and resignations.

“The tragedies have woken us up, and 19 innocent victims must not be forgotten. Social issues are being raised that have been long waiting for courage”, said Mija Purić, a student of medicine at Belgrade University.

If more people across Serbia were to express a strong citizen spirit to fight violence, then more pressure will be felt, Nebojša Zelenović of “Moramo-Zajedno” told EURACTIV.

While fewer protestors attended protests in Belgrade, Radomir Lazović of “Ne davimo Beograd” told the media that this is due to more protests being carried out outside the capital, not waning interest.
