Pensions in Romania will rise by 12.5% as of 1 January 2023, and pensioners with low incomes will receive additional financial support next year, Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca said Monday.

The governing coalition decided to raise all contributory pensions by 12.5% as of the start of 2023, and people who receive less than 3,000 lei (around €600) in their monthly pensions will also get an additional amount in the coming year, the prime minister said.

This “targeted support” will have a different value depending on the monthly incomes, with pensioners at the lowest bracket – who get less than 1,500 lei each month – receiving total support of 1,000 lei split into the two halves of the year.

Additionally, people with low pensions will continue to get the social vouchers (worth 250 lei every two months for people with pensions lower than 1,700 lei), and the government will grant financial aid for energy bills (a fixed amount of 1,400 lei, split in two, to pensioners older than 60 and with monthly pensions lower than 2,000 lei).

Other social payments will also increase, including child allowances, payments for persons with disabilities or allowances for war veterans, the prime minister added.
