Food prices in Athens and Berlin are almost at the same level, but the German minimum wage is more than double the Greek one, leftist Avgi journal has reported.
According to the press report, the situation is dramatic, especially for low to very low incomes.
0″>The combination of price hikes mainly in basic goods, such as energy and food, and very low incomes pushes the loss of purchasing power of households with a monthly income of less than €750 up to 40%.
Referring to Numbeo food prices database on “18” selected foodstuff, the report suggests that Greek consumers, on average, pay €54.5 with a monthly minimum wage of €774 while Germans pay €59.67 with a minimum wage of €1,621.
The main opposition pressures the conservative government to decrease VAT on basic food, which currently stands at 13%, while in Germany is at 7%.
Polls suggest that soaring prices are the main concern of Greeks ahead the crucial 2023 national elections.
According to In.gr news website, the government is mulling a one-time payment of around €100-150 for low incomes.
