The Bundestag approved this year's Defense Ministry budget in the second reading of 62.31 billion euros. Also, 24.06 billion euros were allocated for the Bundeswehr Special Fund, Ukrinform reports.
It is noted that the document was supported by the ruling coalition (CDU/CSU and SPD), while the far-right Alternative for Germany, the Left Party, and the Greens opposed it.
Of the 24.06 billion euros allocated to the Special Fund, 21.64 billion will go to military procurement. Journalists pointed out that this year's budget amount is 10.36 billion more than last year, and the Special Fund is 4.26 billion euros more .
Germany's total defense budget in 2025 will reach 86.37 billion euros. This is a record for the country. Last year it was 52 billion euros plus 20 billion from the Special Fund.
As a reminder, the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has overtaken Chancellor Friedrich Merz 's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in popularity for the first time . If the German parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, the AfD would receive 27% of the vote.
