Policymakers are calling out the cabinet’s decision to allegedly share calculations on the proposed new pension system with the media before presenting it to the parliament.

The House of Representatives has been discussing the legislation for the new pension system for months and de Volkskrant published an article covering calculations made by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) on the matter.

On Monday, Dutch policymakers took to Twitter to denounce the cabinet for allegedly sharing information regarding new calculations on the proposed new pension system made by the country’s central bank with Dutch media before the parliament.

The article in question reported that, on average, the proposed new pension system will lead to a higher pension for employees and pensioners. According to the letter by Schouten, 10,000 economic scenarios were used for the DNB calculation.

“I’m furious. Minister Schouten prefers to give media spin rather than information. Press receives DNB pension calculation before parliament. With positive spin, attention is diverted from the 70bn (!) costs of abolishing the average system that has not been calculated. Questions and debate registered,” tweeted Socialist MP Bart van Kent.

“For the umpteenth time. This cabinet has no regard for parliament,” added Socialist party leader Lilian Marijnissen.

“I’m going to read DNB’s report quietly. Two comments – not everyone can benefit from the same pot – de Volkskrant published before the House had the calculations. (Case so many with this government),” wrote independent MP Pieter Omtzigt.

The Cabinet is preparing a legislative proposal to amend the Pensions Act and, if it is approved by the House of Representatives and the Senate, it will enter into force no later than 1 January 2023, according to DNB.
