Renew Europe chief and leader of the Renaissance presidential party, Stéphane Séjourné, said he would lead the fight to the European elections without clarifying though if he would also lead the party list.
“I will lead the battle for the European elections”, said Séjourné on Sunday in an interview with France Inter and franceinfo.
However, Séjourné did not officially announce that he would head the party’s list.
“We have set a timetable for officially designating a head of the list in January”, he added, with the European elections taking place on 9 June.
Séjourné is widely tipped to be Renew Europe’s candidate in the elections, with Renew MEP Pascal Canfin telling France Inter on Friday that he “will very probably be the head of the Macronist list” next June.
“I’m delighted, I support him 100%”, he added.
In his interview with France Inter and franceinfo, Séjourné detailed some of his political ambitions.
“I want to build a coalition of pro-European parties during this period. I’m in discussions with the UDI, with the Radicals, with François Bayrou, with Édouard Philippe”, he said.
“I am currently conducting discussions on the European elections with our partners”, he continued.
“The campaign will start around January or February. We will have an organisation and a pro-European coalition to put forward, which I hope will be broader than the simple presidential majority”, Séjourné said.
“I want a real debate on the future of Europe”, he added.
Of the total of 705 set to have a seat in the next European Parliament following elections in June next year, 81 will be French.
