Czechia is ready to deepen its collaboration with the United Kingdom in nuclear energy, particularly for developing small modular reactors, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said after meeting his British counterpart Rishi Sunak in Granada.

“We discussed specific projects, especially our common interest in cooperation in developing small modular reactors,” the Czech Prime Minister told journalists during the European Political Community summit in Granada on Thursday.

Czechia already has two conventional nuclear power plants. Still, it plans to expand its nuclear energy capacity with new units of both conventional plants and small modular reactors, with the first small modular reactor expected to be completed by 2032.

Czechia’s strong support for nuclear energy is demonstrated by its constant efforts to secure a better place for nuclear energy in future EU legislation. At a round table on energy and climate change in Granada on Thursday, Fiala also stressed the sector’s importance.

In addition to Sunak, Fiala also met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, with whom he discussed the challenges facing the automotive industry, on which both countries are heavily reliant.

The fight against irregular migration was also the main topic of Fiala’s meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, as Italy has been overwhelmed by the many recent arrivals in Lampedusa. At the same time, Czechia has its own people smuggler problem and has already introduced border controls with some of its neighbours.

Fiala did not forget Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to whom he reiterated Czechia’s strong support.
