It is not only EU rules that we need to introduce, but also regional agreements to fight against climate change in the region very well, Serbian Minister of Eurointegration told Euractiv.
Serbian Minister of Eurointegration, Tanja Miščević, told Euractiv that after the adoption of the Green Deal, Serbia became part of the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans in 2020, which has an important climate change segment.
“Therefore, it is not only EU rules that we need to introduce, but also regional agreements with which we can fight against climate change in the region very well. Climate change has become part of industrial development, so the circular economy is one of the segments of our development, but it also affects the safety of citizens and the need to protect against floods and natural disasters, which also change the way of construction,” she said.
“This plan is in the draft stage, before the Secretariat of the Energy Community, and it will be our response plan in the fight against climate change,” she added.
Climate Week began in Serbia with the opening of the exhibition “Climate Partnership of Serbia and Germany”. The exhibition was opened by Anke Konrad, Ambassador of the Republic of Germany to Serbia.
“We all remember the strong storms in the entire Western Balkans, which caused enormous damage at the end of July. No country in the world can, and should not, face the climate crisis alone. Germany has been supporting Serbia for years, not only to cope with the consequences of the climate crisis but also to lead an active fight against it. It is about producing electricity, improving air quality, creating alternatives to reduce CO2 emissions, and minimizing the population’s health risk,” Ambassador Konrad said.
Miščević said that climate change is becoming something that we all feel. We had the opportunity to face the serious consequences of storms that are not common for Belgrade, Serbia, the region, but also Europe and the world in general.
“Within the framework of ‘Climate Week’, we would like to remind you of the key documents: The Green Agreement of the European Union, our counterpart to that agreement – the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, which promotes several important dates – ready by 2050 and decarbonisation by 2030. These are all important obligations that we have undertaken as a state, but we also have a serious responsibility for their implementation,” she said.
