Scientists and academic researchers will be able to reapply to the European Research Council (ERC) for grants if the UK rejoins Horizon Europe, according to reports on Sunday.
It is now confirmed that scientists and researchers will be able to reapply for grants – 115 of which were terminated by the council because of a delay in the UK’s membership – if the UK returns to Horizon Europe.
“The UK is expected to become an associated country to the EU’s research and innovation framework programme Horizon Europe,” a spokesperson for the ERC said, The Guardian reported.
“The UK will therefore have the same rights and obligations as other countries associated to the programme, which includes the possibility for researchers based in the UK to obtain ERC grants,” they added.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak could decide next week on whether to accept an arrangement to finally see the UK obtain access to the €95 billion Horizon Europe research and development funding programme after two and a half years of delays.
Sunak is set to hold talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of next week’s NATO summit in Vilnius.
