The number of births in Slovenia has been declining in the past five years as its fertility rate fell to 1.55 in 2022 compared to 1.64 the year before, the latest Statistics Office data show.

Slovenia’s fertility rate has been declining every year since 2017, with more people dying than are born.

In 2022,  17,627 children were born or 8.4 per 1,000 population, down 7% from 2021 and the fifth lowest number in the 101 years since population statistics have been available. The natural increase was at a negative 4,865, or 2.3 per 1,000 population, the second largest since the end of World War II.

There was a four-year period around 2000 when there were fewer births than last year, but the figures picked up as larger cohorts born in the 1970s started to have children.

As for the median age of mothers at birth was the highest since the end of World War II, both for all births (31.1 years) and first births (29.6).

Besides that, about 15% of all children were born to mothers with foreign citizenship, with Bosnians leading the way (46%), followed by Kosovars (20%).
