A member of the staff of Senator Rand Paul was stabbed Friday after leaving a restaurant in Washington. He suffered serious wounds that required surgery.
A member of United States Senator Rand Paul’s staff was stabbed Saturday, after leaving a Washington restaurant, by a man who had been released from federal prison 24 hours earlier, records show.
The suspect, Glynn Neal, 42, of Southeast D.C., was arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill, a felony. He is being held without bond, according to court records. In 2011, Mr. Neal was convicted of pandering and making threats to kidnap among other charges, and he had been released from federal prison on Friday.
An attorney listed in court records for Mr. Neal could not be immediately reached.
The staff member, a man who was not identified in charging documents or by Mr. Paul’s office, told officers that he did not know the assailant.
“This past weekend a member of my staff was brutally attacked in broad daylight in Washington, D.C.,” Mr. Paul, Republican of Kentucky, said in a statement. “We are relieved to hear the suspect has been arrested. At this time we would ask for privacy so everyone can focus on healing and recovery.”
The victim was walking with a friend in the 1300 block of H Street NE, after leaving a Mexican restaurant, when Mr. Neal jumped out from behind a wall and started stabbing the staff member, according to charging documents.

Mr. Neal did not say or demand anything of the victim, the authorities said.
The Metropolitan Police officers found a knife down the block from the site of the attack, near droplets of blood and bloodied clothes. They said the victim sustained serious injuries that required surgery, including a laceration to the left ear, a puncture wound to the skull that was likely to have caused a brain bleed and a wound to the torso as well as a punctured lung.
The authorities said that the stabbing was caught on video and that Mr. Neal left a cellphone behind that helped identify him as the suspect.
